Marriage, kids, a car, and a house with the white picket fence— check. There isn’t much more you could want to live a happy life, right? Wrong!!

Melissa’s world is turned upside down when her husband of nearly two decades just up and leaves her to chase his new dream halfway across the country. She is left to pick up the pieces with two other broken hearts to tend to. Just as it becomes too much for her, an opportunity to make a clean break from the past comes with an invitation to live with her aunt and finds her moving what’s left of her family out to the Pacific Northwest.

Melissa is mesmerized by the quaint little town of Yuletide Creek with its snow-capped mountains, the ginormous and beautifully decorated tree in the town square, and every shop and house brightly heralding the season of jolliness. It is indeed the most wonderful time of the year, but she struggles to get into the spirit, especially with two moody teenagers with secrets that make her question herself as a parent.

When a handsome mountain man swoops in and offers to help her with more than just her present predicament, Melissa finds her walls going up. But will his smile and kind grey eyes be enough to melt the ice left by her ex, and will her children finally come around for them to have the most memorable Christmas they’ve had in years?

A picture-perfect life: marriage, kids, a nice car, and a house with a white picket fence. But happiness? Not quite.

Chapter 1
Nicole sputtered the lukewarm coffee she was drinking, almost spilling the liquid onto her scrubs. “Darn it!” she hissed as she managed to maneuver herself fast enough.
She’d just remembered the X-ray images she’d sent for printing. She quickly set the cup on the counter and dashed to the printer. The lab door crashed against the wall as she charged breathlessly to the copy room.
“He almost beat you to it,” Sarah, the technician, giggled as she breezed past her down the hall.
“Not funny, Sarah,” Nicole replied as she slid to the door and rushed inside. They were still there. She sighed with relief, swiftly picked them up, and then left the room.
She was just in time. Dr. Anthony walked hurriedly out of his office, his head buried in the file he held in his hand, and headed straight for her. He looked up just as he got to her, as if he had been expecting her to be there waiting for him. He smirked and held out his hand.
“You actually got it this time,” he said.
She clenched her jaw, forced a smile, and slapped the images into his hand.
He didn’t say thanks. He never did. He simply buried his head in the folder once more and walked off.
“You’re welcome,” she called out after him.
He grunted, then turned the corner. Nicole turned back around and headed for the small office in the lab she shared with Sarah.
“Such a douche!” Sarah complained.
Nicole sat on the swivel stool, feeling annoyed. She picked up the coffee cup and gazed inside, but it was ruined. She dumped the contents and sat back down to look over the other clients that she had scheduled for the day.
“Why do you let him talk to you like that?” Sarah finally turned and asked, probably out of frustration. “You’re one of the best technicians here at the clinic. You’re always on time. You never give crappy images. You’re never ever rude, although I don’t understand why…”
“Ugh,” Nicole grunted and rubbed her forehead. “I don’t want to get into it now, Sarah,” she moped. “I’m tired. It’s been a long day, and I just want to go home, soak myself in the hot tub, and pretend none of this exists.”
“He should treat you better. That’s all I’m saying,” Sarah persisted as she pouted her pink lips.
Nicole glanced sideways at her. Sarah’s head was lowered, and her golden ponytail brushed against her shoulders. “Thanks,” she finally said.
“Pssh!” Sarah hissed, waving her off. “You’re too nice,” she said, widening her eyes at her. “That’s your problem.”
“Yeah, that or I’m just an idiot.” Nicole sighed. “Excuse me. I have another patient.”
“I have a few scans to run myself,” Sarah replied as she got up.
Nicole sighed to herself as she walked out of the office and into the lobby. Sarah wasn’t wrong. Dr. Anthony wasn’t the best person to work with. She was good at her job, but she never really felt appreciated. Lucky for her, she wasn’t doing it for him.
But she still didn’t understand why she put up with his arrogance and rudeness. It wasn’t as if she couldn’t get a job somewhere else.
But she enjoyed helping her patients in any way she could, even if it meant she had to work for Dr. Grouch. She felt hopeful when she saw the next name on the schedule. It was one of her favorite clients.
“Lilian Weber?” Nicole called when she got to the waiting room.
“Here,” a silver-haired woman said as she struggled to a stand. The gentleman next to her jumped up and assisted her in grabbing her cane.
“Thanks, dear.” She smiled, patting his hand as she wobbled over to a smiling Nicole.
“Hello, Lily,” Nicole beamed at the woman.
