Chapter 1
Addison

“I really am coming, Sarah. You don’t need to stay on the phone with me the whole time,” she muttered before pulling the phone away from her ear. She switched to a video call, and Sarah’s familiar tanned face filled the screen. Sarah squinted as soon as she saw Addison and pursed her lips together. With a sigh, Addison set her phone down on the dresser and propped it up to face the bed, lit by tiny particles of the early morning sun.
Sarah didn’t say a thing for the longest time while Addison continued to pack.
She picked up and set down several clothing items, pausing to fold them over her arm. When she turned her back to Sarah and started placing things in the middle of her suitcase, Sarah’s familiar snort filled the room. Addison wheeled around to face Sarah, her friend of twenty years, and frowned.
“What now?”
“I thought you were staying for a few weeks.” Sarah’s brows furrowed. “That won’t be enough to get you through those weeks.”
“I can pick up some clothes while I’m there,” Addison replied without looking at her. “I like to travel light.”
“I thought you were trying to save money.”
Addison glanced at Sarah and raised an eyebrow. “Are you going to criticize everything I do for this trip? This is supposed to be fun, Sarah.”
“Addy, you and I both know that the real reason you’re coming down after years of me nagging and pestering you is because you need inspiration for your new novel. Rockport has been known to inspire many people.”
Addison sighed. “You know that’s not the only reason. We haven’t seen each other in two years.”
“You live like an hour away, and you never come down to visit,” Sarah pointed out, pausing to mutter something into the background. Behind her, Addison spotted a cluster of snow-filled trees and bright Christmas decorations dangling from buildings. Rockport already looked like something out of a Hallmark movie, and Addison knew it was exactly what she needed to get her groove back.
The fact that Sarah happened to live there was a bonus.
“I’ll make it up to you,” Addison replied with a slight shake of her head. “While I’m down there, we can spend a lot of time together. How about that? I hope Rob and the kids don’t mind.”
Sarah snorted. “I won’t give them a choice in the matter. You’ll end up falling in love with Rockport, and you won’t want to leave. It’s just like in those Christmas movies.”
“Complete with a dog and a whirlwind romance?”
Sarah burst into laughter. “I wasn’t going to go that far. You really miss Jeremy, huh? How are you doing after the breakup anyway? You hardly ever talk about him.”
“Because I’m trying to move on,” Addison mumbled. “You know that we move in the same social circles, so I’ve seen a lot of him.”
Except she had no interest in rehashing her sordid story with Jeremy Meyers.
Not when the two of them had fizzled out, in spite of her best attempts to revive the relationship. As far as she was concerned, her writer’s block couldn’t have come at a better time because it was exactly the excuse she needed to get out of the city, away from her everyday routine, and immerse herself in something different. A quick internet search of Rockport proved that it was exactly the kind of place she needed to get back up again.
And come out swinging for the fences.
“He’s an idiot anyway,” Sarah told her, the camera bouncing up and down while she moved. “When you get here, you’ll forget all about him.”
“Is it all part of the Rockport experience?”
“Absolutely. You’re bringing Whiskers along, aren’t you?”
