Haunted by a tragic accident, Grace Morone returns to her hometown of Belmont after being gone a decade, seeking reconciliation with her estranged family. As she battles against the clock to save her hometown from relentless developers, Grace finds herself torn between the shadows of her past and the uncertain promise of a healed future.
Belmont is under siege. Big city developers are knocking at the door, and the town council is beseeching Grace to use her expertise to help save their beloved home. Torn between conflicting family loyalties and her desire to remain unobtrusive, Grace finds herself in a race against time. Now, as Christmas approaches, she's desperate to heal old wounds, reconnect, and perhaps even rekindle a lost romance with her high school sweetheart, Jack Sutton, who's also found his way back home— adding another layer of complexity to her already tumultuous journey.
As Grace grapples with finding peace with her family, negotiating with the developers, and battling her resurging feelings for Jack, long-held family secrets threaten to upheave the fragile peace that the Morones are clinging to. With so much at stake, and Christmas just around the corner, will Grace manage to save Belmont and find the forgiveness she seeks? And can she and Jack find their way back to each other amidst the chaos?
Grace Morone, burdened by the weight of a tragic accident, returns to her hometown of Belmont after a decade away, hoping to mend ties with her estranged family. As she races to protect the town from aggressive developers, Grace must confront the ghosts of her past while grasping for the fragile hope of a brighter future.
Chapter 1
She hoisted the bag over her head and shoved it onto the shelf. Then she rubbed her hands together and glanced down at Chance, who had already curled up on the couch and brought her head to rest against her paws. When Grace Morone sat down and stretched her legs out in front of her, she had the distinct feeling that she was making a big mistake.
Underneath her, the train rumbled and idled. Through the windows, she saw people gathered on the platform, many of them hugging each other and a few hurrying past in either direction. Frowning, she pressed her face to the cold glass and studied the overcast sky through the glass-arched ceiling.
In the distance, thunder rumbled, and what little particles of light were visible before disappeared. More and more passengers on the platform straightened their backs and boarded the train. Grace placed her hand on Chance’s head and scratched behind her ears. The door to their compartment slid open, and an elderly couple bundled up in large coats and matching dark pants walked in.
Offering her smiles, the two of them placed a small bag on the shelf above them. Immediately, the man unfolded his newspaper and sat down to read. The woman, on the other hand, glanced over at Chance, and her smile grew wider.
“Well, aren’t you a pretty little thing?”
Chance’s tail wagged as she lifted her head.
“What kind of treats does she like?” The woman swung her gaze over to Grace; something about her weathered and maternal face was inviting. “I have a few carrots.”
“She loves carrots,” Grace replied, some of the knots in her stomach unfolding. “Are you sure you guys don’t mind that she’s in the compartment with us? The conductor told me they’d put her in a crate in the baggage area if there were too many people.”
“Not at all, dear.”
As much as Grace hated being separated from her dog, she knew she couldn’t force anyone else to tolerate her presence. A white and black stray, Chance kept to herself and was well-trained, but she still got a few curious looks when the two of them got on the train fifteen minutes ago. A loud whistle sliced through the air, and Grace jerked upright, twisting in her seat to watch the platform disappear.
Once they exited the North Station, Grace settled back against the seat and folded her hands in her lap. Chance hopped off and sniffed the floor beneath her feet. The elderly woman spent the entire twenty-minute ride fussing over Chance and feeding her carrots.
The man, on the other hand, continued to flip through his newspaper.
Something was eerily familiar about the sight, and it wasn’t until Belmont emerged outside her window in a series of snow-covered rooftops and twinkling Christmas lights hung up as far as the eye could see that Grace realized why.
The couple across from her reminded her so much of her parents that it sent a jolt through Grace’s core.
She wasn’t sure she was ready to see them again after a year of clipped phone calls and grainy video chats.
For the first time in weeks, Grace began to question her decision to visit Belmont at all.
You’re on vacation, remember? It was a forced vacation, but a vacation, nonetheless. You should try to enjoy it.
Squinting, Grace studied Belmont’s town center, covered in a thin layer of white, and a smile tugged on the edge of her lips. Slowly, the train pulled to a stop at Belmont Center, the commuter rail situated at the intersection of Common Street and Concord Avenue. Heart hammering unsteadily against her chest, Grace sat up straighter and motioned to Chance, who curled up at her feet.
